Naked beauty — A daring Renaissance subject In classical art, naked male bodies were a common feature. It is thought that Simonetta was born at Portovenere in Liguria, romantically this is the birthplace of the goddess Venus. The subject is not strictly the "Birth of Venus", a title only given the painting in the nineteenth century though given as the subject by Vasaribut the next scene in her story, where she arrives on land, blown by the wind.
Technical The painting is large, but slightly smaller than the Primavera, and where that is a panel painting, this is on the cheaper support of canvas. At any rate, The Birth of Venus depicts the moment when, having emerged from the sea in a shell, Venus lands at Paphos in Cyprus.
The painting shows the triumphant Goddess of Love and Beauty. Botticelli paid much attention to her hair and hairstyle, which reflected his interest in the way women wore their long hair in the late fifteenth century. As she lifts a foot to step off her gilded shell, the winds shower her with roses - each with a golden heart according to mythology the rose flowered for the first time when Venus was born - while the orange blossom on the tree in the middle ground is also fringed with gold.
This was first suggested by Herbert Horne in his monograph ofthe first major modern work on Botticelli, and long followed by most writers, but more recently has been widely doubted, though it is still accepted by some.
Other Interpretations The Birth of Venus has attracted a number of other explanations from a variety of scholars, historians and related experts.

It is said that every day Lorenzo the Great assembled groups of humanists, philosophers and artists to form a literary society who interpreted works and formed ideas that were then translated by the artists, painters, goldsmiths and musicians.
The background does give off the effect of space though. In the painting we see here, Venus is prominently depicted in the center, born out of the foam as she rides to shore. She is not standing but floating. It was commissioned by Lorenzo the Magnificent of the Medici Familywhose quattrocento humanist circle was particularly interested in classical mythology, and marks the culmination of the revival of ancient myths, within the context of a humanistic Renaissance art.
Here, Renaissance humanism was open not only to the use of a pagan sculpture as a model, but also a pagan narrative for the subject matter.

I dont know about you but i find the title of this artwork to be a little weird since Venus is portrayed as a full grown woman and not a baby as since its suppose to be the birth of the goddess.
